Lisa's Story

My journey

October 4th, 2019…. A date I will never forget. The date I was diagnosed with intestinal cancer.

A fuzzy day, a day that seemed like a long nightmare to me. With the drugs and painkillers to help me with the pain, I was only half there. Conscious enough to realize and understand that my life was changing, whether I wanted it to, or not.

It had all started the day before, October 3, with severe pain in the abdominal area on the left side. I endured the pain until the next day. Late that night, the pain got worse. My spouse took me to the emergency room. The pain was intensifying, and I had a fever. After a series of tests and a CT-Scan, the diagnosis hit like a ton of bricks. A cancerous mass in the intestines, and a perforation in the wall of my Intestine.

I was admitted to the Hospital, and emergency surgery was scheduled for the next morning. The procedure went well, despite the bad news. The doctor told me that maybe he would have to do a colostomy (a bag attached to the abdomen). Upon awakening, no colostomy bag, but 1 foot of intestine removed. He had also found a spot of cancer on my liver, more shocking and unwanted news.

J’avais tellement peur! Une grosse étape à affronter mais je me disais toujours, ceci est pour me guérir.

After ten days of hospitalization with the unknown and uncertainties in front of me, I left to meet with my Oncologist in Moncton. He explained to me that this type of cancer treats well. I would have 12 aggressive curative chemotherapy treatments. I was informed that I needed to fully recover from my surgery before I could start the treatments. If I responded well to the treatments, my liver surgery would take place.

Fast forward to November 26, 2019, day 1 of my first treatment. I was so scared! A big step to face but I always said to myself, this is to cure me.

After my 6th treatment, the liver spot had diminished to the point that it was hardly visible! Great news!!!

Once again, I am scheduled to go under the knife for another surgery to remove the part of the liver affected by cancer. The scheduled date, February 29. When I woke up, the doctor advised me that everything had gone really well! He checked everywhere and there was no trace of cancer anymore! I was so relieved!! Needless to say it was a long and painful recovery from the surgery ... much more painful than the first. After 7 months, I still have pain.

A month after my last surgery, I once again commenced my chemotherapy treatments, I just had 6 left! One last fight!

I won’t say it was easy, as it would be a lie. The nausea was unbearable, and intense. Oftentimes, I had the urge to just let go, give up and stop everything. Even with 4 different nausea medications, the nausea wouldn’t subside.

But I didn’t give up! I continued my treatments and kept my hopes up. I was so well surrounded. I had always had love, support and help from my family and my friends. I owe them a lot! I thank them from the bottom of my heart.

Lisa xx

I completed my treatments on June 8, 2020. Since that day, I have been living life one day at a time and enjoying each day as if it were my last. I'm still scared, but I feel so lucky to still be with my family.

I have the greatest admiration for all those who have faced, are currently facing, and will face cancer in the future. We don't know the future, and although today I'm fine, that fear haunts me and will always haunt me I believe. I force myself every day not to live in fear and to live my life… "my second life" because my life before cancer is not the one I live now.

This second life is filled with recognition! The colors are more beautiful, the sky is bluer than before, the flowers smell better than before and love is more beautiful than ever!

Thank you to my family, friends, wonderful doctors and staff who gave me the best care.

Thank you to everyone who supported and encouraged me on my journey, the journey that has changed my way of seeing life.

I love you
